“Were Reiki to be extended to the whole world, it would reach the human core and understanding of society. It would be a precious aid for many of us, healing not just illnesses but also the Earth as a whole.”
Maxim carved on the tomb of Mikao Usui Sensei
There are various versions available of the life of Usui Sensei. He was certainly an extraordinary man, born to achieve a task during his life that was quite out of the ordinary. He received Buddhist instruction from an early age. With a wealth of experiences in his life behind him, he possessed knowledge that was founded in diverse realms such as medicine, Buddhism, psychology and theology. He took great inspiration from the spiritual masters of his era.
At the age of 57, Usui Sensei received the gift of Reiki in March 1922 during a 21-day retreat at Kurama Yama, a sacred mountain in North Kyoto. It was at that moment that he received the whole healing energy of Reiki.
When he realised the value of the gift that he had received, he straight away used it to help his family and others in need of healing. In April the same year, he opened a Reiki clinic at Harajuku, Aoyama, Tokyo.
The more he intensified his practice the more he acquired a profound understanding of Reiki, developing a variety of new healing techniques and exercises.
He taught and practised Reiki for the rest of his life, and developed a teaching method. He initiated over 2000 people for therapeutic purposes, and by the time of his transition on 9th March 1926, he had trained twenty teacher (Shinhan) with the same capacities as him so that they could practise and teach it.
